Delayed device or Screen-free?

The difference between Delayed device and Screen-free is mostly one axis: how much. Delayed device sits between the two; Screen-free sits firmly toward as little as possible. They agree, more than most people expect, on their own device, other families and conflict the household can absorb. Neither is the correct one. What follows is what each asks of a parent, and where the difference actually shows up on a Tuesday.

The two questions are separated completely. Television, the family tablet and the shared computer are ordinary and managed loosely; a personal, pocket, always-on, camera-carrying device is a different thing and is delayed for years past the point it becomes normal. The position travels well because it is collective — it is far easier to hold when other families in the class hold it too, which is exactly what the pledge campaigns exist to do.

What it asks of you

  • Finding other families to hold it with you, or your child holds it alone
  • An answer for the period when their friends are on a group chat they are not
  • Distinguishing the device from the internet, since they will meet the second regardless

Screens are simply not part of the house for the early years — usually until around seven, and the reasoning is developmental rather than about content. The argument is that young children build attention, imagination and boredom tolerance out of unmediated time, and that a screen is not a neutral container for good content but a different kind of hour. It is the only position here with no grey area to manage, which is both its cost and the whole of its appeal.

What it asks of you

  • Absorbing every argument, because there is no partial version to fall back on
  • A plan for the aeroplane, the waiting room and the illness — the three places it breaks
  • Standing apart from every other household your child visits
  • Adults who mostly follow it too, or the child learns the rule is about being small

Where they agree

Usually more than the argument between them suggests.

  • Their own device. Both sit firmly toward as late as possible.
  • Other families. Both sit firmly toward holding the line whatever others do.
  • Conflict the household can absorb. Both sit firmly toward able to take the argument every time.

Neither of these is the correct one

Which fits depends on what you value and on what your week actually allows — and the second of those is the half nobody writes about. The questionnaire scores both.
