Guideline-led or Screen-free?

Guideline-led and Screen-free differ most on what screens are, other families and how much the week needs them. They agree, more than most people expect, on alone or together. Neither is the correct one. What follows is what each asks of a parent, and where the difference actually shows up on a Tuesday.

You take the question as settled by people who have looked at it properly, and follow the age-banded guidance: none under eighteen months, an hour or so for the under-fives, consistent limits after that. The appeal is that it removes the argument from the household and puts it somewhere external, which is a real benefit and not a lazy one.

What it asks of you

  • Keeping up, since the guidance has moved a lot and will move again
  • Tolerating that the most-quoted numbers are the least evidence-based part of it
  • Enforcing a limit you did not personally set, which is easier in some households and harder in others

Screens are simply not part of the house for the early years — usually until around seven, and the reasoning is developmental rather than about content. The argument is that young children build attention, imagination and boredom tolerance out of unmediated time, and that a screen is not a neutral container for good content but a different kind of hour. It is the only position here with no grey area to manage, which is both its cost and the whole of its appeal.

What it asks of you

  • Absorbing every argument, because there is no partial version to fall back on
  • A plan for the aeroplane, the waiting room and the illness — the three places it breaks
  • Standing apart from every other household your child visits
  • Adults who mostly follow it too, or the child learns the rule is about being small

Neither of these is the correct one

Which fits depends on what you value and on what your week actually allows — and the second of those is the half nobody writes about. The questionnaire scores both.
