Behavioural / structured or Positive discipline?

The difference between Behavioural / structured and Positive discipline is mostly one axis: behaviour or feeling. Behavioural / structured sits toward what they did; Positive discipline sits toward what is underneath it. They agree, more than most people expect, on where guidance comes from and how full the week is. Neither is the correct one. What follows is what each asks of a parent, and where the difference actually shows up on a Tuesday.

Behaviour is addressed as behaviour. The rule is stated in advance, the consequence follows immediately and identically every time, and the discussion happens later or not at all — because the discussion is what most children are after. Reward systems run the same way in reverse. It is the most reliably effective approach in the short run and makes the fewest claims about anything else.

What it asks of you

  • Near-perfect consistency; the method is the consistency and fails without it
  • Not explaining yourself mid-incident, which feels wrong to most parents who try it
  • Every adult in the house running the same system
  • Accepting that it manages behaviour and does not claim to do more

Adlerian in origin: misbehaviour is read as a mistaken attempt to belong, so the answer is to give the child a real job in the family rather than a punishment. Family meetings are literal. Consequences exist but must be related to what happened, and encouragement replaces praise — you comment on the effort and the contribution rather than on the child.

What it asks of you

  • Running family meetings, in practice and not in theory
  • Finding a related consequence under time pressure, which is much harder than imposing any consequence
  • Holding firm and kind in the same sentence
  • Patience with a method that is slower than counting to three and is supposed to be

Where they agree

Usually more than the argument between them suggests.

  • Where guidance comes from. Both sit toward research, books, a named method.
  • How full the week is. Both sit a little toward unstructured time, boredom is fine.

Neither of these is the correct one

Which fits depends on what you value and on what your week actually allows — and the second of those is the half nobody writes about. The questionnaire scores both.
