Free-range or Gentle parenting?

The difference between Free-range and Gentle parenting is mostly one axis: response to distress. Free-range sits toward let them work through it; Gentle parenting sits toward step in and settle them straight away. They agree, more than most people expect, on consistency that can be held and who decides. Neither is the correct one. What follows is what each asks of a parent, and where the difference actually shows up on a Tuesday.

Children get the roaming range their grandparents had, on the argument that the world is not measurably more dangerous and that constant supervision has costs of its own. Walking to school alone, using a knife, going to the shop — earlier than is now normal, and openly. The position is as much about adult anxiety as about children.

What it asks of you

  • Tolerating other adults' disapproval, which is the real cost and arrives quickly
  • Genuinely letting go, rather than following at a distance
  • Accepting a higher rate of minor injury as the price of competence
  • A neighbourhood, and sometimes a legal jurisdiction, that permits it

The behaviour is a signal and the signal is what you answer. Punishment is off the table, not as a tactic but as a commitment; what replaces it is staying close while a child is at their worst. It is the most visible approach of the last decade and the least codified — its texts agree completely about punishment and disagree with each other about almost everything else, which is why this row is wide where it is wide.

What it asks of you

  • Regulating yourself first, in the moment you least want to
  • Accepting that the same limit will be tested many more times than it would be elsewhere
  • Considerable time — connection is slower than a consequence
  • Resisting the version of it circulating online, which has no limits in it at all

  • Who decides. Both sit a little toward we work it out with them.

Neither of these is the correct one

Which fits depends on what you value and on what your week actually allows — and the second of those is the half nobody writes about. The questionnaire scores both.
